Day 5
Day 5
Once there, there is a live band playing in the patio area. I order a muffuletta Italian sandwich. It originated from Italians in the New Orleans area. It was pretty good. We also order some beignets. It was the first time I've had'em and they were ok. They're bread with powdered sugar (lots of it). I got quite messy and looked like a character out of Pulp Fiction (male version).
I hop into a $2/$5 game around 3pm and the game is hopping. I'm sorry, but old guys in the south can't play a lick of poker.
Poker: Ep limp, I go $45 with QJcc right after, btn and limper call to 235ccx I cbet $75, btn raises to $225, limper thinks and cold calls. I'm a little concerned limper could have a bigger fd. Also we're all $3k deep (or effective). I call. Turn is the 8c giving me a flush. The optimal play here is for me to bet, something like $350-$500, but my spidey senses were tingling and I checked and btn chks. River is the 5c, worst card I thought, pairs the board and makes the board a 4 flush. Limper bets $475, I fold, btn shows 64hh for a flopped straight and folds. Limper shows A4cc for a flopped wheel + nfd. I got lucky by getting out cheaply that hand. I don't hate my turn check because both players were regs/competent, we're all super deep, and ranges are tight and good, so I could be in a terrible spot if I bet turn and get raised as the pot will be severely bloated by then. Also I'm likely only getting 2 streets from worse so I can see a safe River card to get value from sets and straights. I do miss value vs smaller flushes though but that scenario is less likely than the other scenarios.
Poker: 3 limp, I raise to $55 w/ AJo, 2 guys call to QT8ccx, old guy donks (bets out) $125, only I call, turn 9x he bets $225, I call, riv Kx (ding), he bets $500, I raise him all in for his remaining $800, he thinks only for a little bit and calls off with KQo. I never get paid off here in Vegas.
Poker: 1 limp, kid on my right raises to $55, in the btn straddle and call $45 more with KQcx, limper calls to Q95ccc, chks to me, I bet $75, folds to kid, he check raises to $175...this line looks like nonsense and I've played with him the night before and he betsizes based on his hand strength...my read is his hand is likely to be weak here, at best some draw w 8-9 outs. I call. Turn is Tx, he checks and I know he's behind but don't want to fold him out, especially when I have he Kc, and I bet $210, he calls. Riv is a brick, and we chk and he opens AKss and I win. Very poorly played hand by him.
Poker: It's true in poker that being on the left is very advantageous, because you get to act after the players on your right. Ep goes $35, Sam Grizzle with $400 to start calls, 2 more calls including said kid from above, I 3bet to $150 with K9dd, Sam calls (which is terrible given his stack), kid calls to KJ3r flop. Chks to me, I bet $180, Sam folds (lol, don't have to see his hand to know he played terribly), kid thinks and cr me to $360 (see hand above), I call. Turn is a 2d giving me a flush draw. I expect him to check since he's weak, and he does. It's probably ok to check behind but given that we know he's pretty weak and possibly drawing, I bet $385, and he tanks a long time and shows me QQ and folds. Not only do I have position on him, a large skill gap on him, but almost a dead on read on his game, he's nearly drawing dead in hands with me.
I take a late dinner break. Game was so good and my mind was pretty focused on it that I lose track of time to realize it's past 10pm and almost all places are closed for food. I know of one place open (Daisy Dukes!) and I quickly head there and have the crawfish etouffee and get back to my game, only to have seen the kid gone. TwoHats says the kid got in $2500 preflop with QQ vs an old guys's AA. I'm gonna guess he got frustrated and emotions played a part in him getting in so much money behind. By nature, we have emotions, but when you play poker, you need to leave them out all the time, and for the most part, I do, but it's difficult to do, for just about everybody. Poker does test you in so many ways. I estimate the kid lost $5k on the day.
Recap: I quit shortly after and book an $1800 win for the day. I'm pretty happy that I was able to quit early (around midnight) and will be able to get a good night's sleep during the night for once (or so I think). I do regret not being able to do my daily devotional. I'm a little disappointed in myself I didn't take a break sometime and spend 5-10mins doing it. I come back to the room and Kevin is in bed and the thermometer is 67...sigh.
